Julia Szabo has received acclaim for her versatility
and striking personality on the opera stage. She made
her Washington Opera debut in Handel's Giulio
Cesare, followed by her Carnegie Hall debut
with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in Rossini's Il
Signor Bruschino. Her performance in Alessandro
Scarlatti's Gli Equivoci nel Sembiante was
praised in Palermo for its expressiveness. Some of
her most memorable opera performances have been in
Puccini's Gianni Schicchi (Metropolitan
Opera Guild, 1997), The Mikado (Opera
Northeast, 1994), and Rossini's Il
Barbiere di Siviglia (Tulsa Opera, 1993). Ms.
Szabo has sung in Handel's Amadigi and
Rossini's La Gazza Ladra at
the Caramoor International Music Festival.
She has distinguished herself on the concert stage
as well. Her 1993 Avery Fisher Hall debut was as a
dramatic last minute replacement in Mozart's Mass
in C minor with the National Chorale. She has
sung with the American Symphony Orchestra in Kurt Weill's Kings
and Prophecies, the Orchestra of St. Luke's
in Copland's The Tender Land,
the New York Virtuosi Chamber Ensemble in Barber's A
Hand of Bridge, and the Stamford Symphony in
Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass.
Audiences at New York's prestigious Bachworks ensemble
have heard her in several Bach cantatas, including Widerstehe
doch der Sünde and the "Peasant" Cantata.
